about-us-1

Welcome

Welcome to Chuck Edits, also known Chuck Writes and Edits. My name is Chuck Carroll, and I’m a longtime journalist moving into the next phase of my writing career, as a freelancer. I live in San Jose, California, in the heart of dynamic Silicon Valley. I’m a dad, a husband, a music fan of wide tastes (especially if it’s got a taste of jazz in it), and a fan of the Golden State Warriors, the Boston Celtics, the San Francisco Giants, the Boston Red Sox and the San Jose Sharks. Thank you for checking out my page. I hope we can work together.

My Approach

I’m a curious guy, and I find most people have a great and fascinating story, even if they don’t always think so, and even if they don’t know how to tell it very well themselves. So, before we work together, you and I will sit down and talk about what makes you you, who your ideal audience is and what they care about, your personal and/or business goals and even your business’ pain points. We’ll strategize about what kind of information will engage your audience on a personal or emotional level, so that you’ll come to mind when they need you. I’ll want to know how I can help you counter any customer-engagement obstacles you perceive. Once we decide to work together, I’ll put together informative, interesting and memorable stories (marketing content) that reflect your values and keep your business top-of-mind with like-minded customers and prospects. I take a real interest in your success because I’m gratified by providing top-quality work to great clients. By the way, I can write and edit all sorts of stuff (speeches, internal communications, newsletters, social media, etc.) and work hand-in-glove with your communications people, if any, or with other writers, content producers, visual artists and web designers. Why else would you want to work with me?

  • Strong work ethic.
  • Sense of humor.
  • Welcome constructive feedback.
  • Straightforward communication style.
  • Responsive and accountable.
  • Straight-up genius.
  • Humble.

My Story

I’m a recovering newspaper guy with lots of reporting and editing experience. That makes me more of a generalist than a specialist. Meeting daily deadlines in medium and large markets for many years, however, made me into a pretty quick study. I’ve interviewed all sorts of people, learned how to keep confidences and remain cool under pressure. I know how to find information. I’ll  even ask dumb questions if necessary, check the facts, simplify the complex and construct a compelling narrative that’s aligned with your business and marketing goals.

 San Jose City Hall/Public Domain

I’m kind of a policy nerd.

I took a buyout from the San Jose Mercury News in May 2016 and hung out my freelancer’s shingle at the end of that year. It’s been a great learning experience and a joy to run my own little business. To the extent I have any specialized subject-matter expertise — and especially keen interest — it would be in government, public policy, housing, transportation, the environment and urban and economic development.

Since leaving the paper, I’ve been doing a variety of work for a variety of clients:

Writing success stories for award-winning Silicon Valley digital agency WebEnertia .

Editing and ghostwriting for Silicon Valley Community Foundation, among other things.

Meet the Team

Team? What team? It’s just me. But I do have access to all kinds of creative talent: graphic designers, photographers, videographers, artists and musicians, as well as web designers and more. If you don’t have preferred people in mind for a given project, I can assemble a highly experienced team for you. Because my reputation depends on it, I will only contract with professionals I can trust.
